Verb as Complement

verb as complement
Jika verb menjadi complement (objek) dalam sebuah kalimat, maka verbs tersebut bisa berbentuk Verb+ing atau to+verb. Penentuan bentuk tersebut (apakah verb+ing atau to+verb) tergantung oleh verb yang menjadi predicate dalam kalimat itu.

Berikut ini adalah beberapa verbs yang diikuti oleh verb+ing: consider, finish, imagine, miss, mind, spend (time), etc.
Examples:
1. I consider moving to a better school.
2. I finished reading that book when she came to borrow it from me.
3. I don’t mind waiting a little bit longer.
4. We spent three hours working on that problem.
Verbs yang diikuti oleh preposition (kata depan) juga memerlukan complement verb+ing: end up keep on, think about, plan on,etc.
Examples:
1. How did you end up living here?
2. I keep on trying until I finally succeed.
3. Do you think about going for a holiday?
Berikut ini adalah beberapa verbs yang diikuti oleh to+verb: agree, decide, happen, offer, seem, intend, expect, etc.
Examples:
1. They agree to pay Rp 500.000,- for that job.
2. I am expecting to have a better-paid job.
3. After negotiation for months, they finally decide to sign the contract.
Some verbs have different meaning when they are followed by Verb+ing or to+verb. They are: remember, stop, try.Examples:
1. I stopped talking to him
2. I stopped to talk to him.
3. They didn’t remember locking the door.
4. They didn’t remember to lock the door.
Whether it is verb+ing or to+verb, the following verbs have the same meaning. The verbs are: begin, bother, continue, start, like, love, hate.Examples:
1. I must begin thinking of my attitude towards him.
2. I must begin to think of my attitude towards him.
3. I love watching football.
4. I love to watch football.
